The plush organic texture of a Moroccan Beni rug can enrich a room like no other style of rug. A Moroccan hand knotted rug lends a feeling of warmth to sleek mid century design. They are stylish and durable. They will outlast their owner, and they are made entirely by hand. The shearing of the wool, the dying of the color, the knot by knot creation, and the final wash finishing – every aspect of the production is entirely by hand.
We are a family of weavers who live and work six hours outside of Marrakesh in the Atlas Mountains. Our rugs pull inspiration from both traditional Berber designs and motifs and the expressionist painters of the modern art eras.
Travel to Morocco is an exciting prospect, and those mysterious miles and miles of alleyways in the souks of Morocco are half the fun. But a surer way to get just the design and size you need, is to order from us!
HOW OUR RUGS ARE MADE
✧Hand sourcing the Wool
The unique process of creating an authentic Moroccan Beni Ourain rug begins with procuring the wool. Our rugs are made from premium sheep’s wool from animals that graze in the mountains of Morocco. The wool is hand sheered, cleaned and scoured, until the natural oils are removed.
✧Hand spinning the wool
Our premium Moroccan sheep’s wool is hand spun and transformed into twists of fiber for the purpose of making yarn. These thread are perfect for weaving and they will form the warp of the loom. The warp of our rugs is made from 100% natural wool.
✧Knotting the rug
After the loom is set up and the wool warp has been strung, the skill of our weavers comes to the forefront. A line of weft is placed between rows of hand tied knots to produce a densely woven, plush pile that is as durable as it is soft.
✧Trimming the rug
Once the rug is complete, it is cut from the loom and trimmed. The pile is hand sheered for organic texture. The rug is not ready for washing.
✧Washing and finishing the rug
The final step in the creation of a hand knotted Moroccan rug is the washing and drying, which is done several times in a 3 step process to ensure freshness and suppleness of the pile. Lastly, the rug is let to dry naturally in the warm Moroccan sun.
✧Hand crafted works of art
The making of a Moroccan rug is a tremendously labor intensive process. It takes an incredible amount of skill. It takes multiple hands, a variety of specified skills, and the talents of women whose knowledge has been passed down to them from their mother’s and grandmother’s and all those women who came before them. A hand knotted Moroccan rugs requires weeks of threading and knotting of wool, but the final result is a work of art, an investment for its new owner.
